The Senior World Wrestling Championship is held in Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan. Haji Aliyev (61 kg), who won a gold medal on the second day of the tournament, shared his joy and his views on his bouts:

“I am very happy to have become the World Champion. I dedicate this title to all our people, all wrestling fans. The training camps we held played a special role in me becoming the champion, because we had very high-level preparations.

I held 4 bouts before the final round. The matches against the Ukrainian and Cuban sportsmen were very tense. I was very tired in the first half. I listened to my coaches’ advices very carefully in the break and it motivated me to win.

I was looking forward to the victory against the Iranian wrestler. We had had two bouts previously. He had won in one of them, and I had gained victory in the second. At the end of the final round I raised my hand and wanted to signal to the Iranian wrestler that I was stronger than him. I proved that I am the strongest wrestler of 2014.

I am very glad to have proved that the gold medal I won at the European Championship in Finland this year was not a coincidence. The 1st European Games are ahead of us. The first priority is to win at the European Games. And then we should think of the Olympics.”
