The 2nd Youth Olympic Games have finished in Nanjing, China. Our national wrestling team was represented with a full team at the Olympics.

Our wrestlers won their licenses to the Olympic Games at the European Championship held in Samokov, Bulgaria, in May this year. Our freestyle wrestlers had received licenses in 3 weight categories and our Greco-Roman and female wrestlers won licenses for the Olympics in 2 weight classes each. However, according to FILA regulations each country can be represented by only 2 Greco-Roman and freestyle and 1 female wrestlers at the Olympic Games.

Our country was represented by Teymur Mammadov (63 kg) and Igbal Hajizadeh (100 kg) in freestyle wrestling, by Leyla Gurbanova (52 kg) in female wrestling and by Jabbar Najafov (50 kg) and Islambek Dadov (69 kg) in Greco-Roman wrestling.

Each one of our sportsmen fought confidently. They once again proved that Azerbaijan is a wrestling country by winning 3 gold and 2 silver medals. This achievement is a clear example of attention and care towards sports, especially wrestling, in the country. The Head of State, president of the National Olympic Committee, Mr. Ilham Aliyev always express his full confidence in our sportsmen during their meetings before and after such events. These achievements are a result of the loyalty of our wrestlers towards the trust of the head of the country.

Our Greco-Roman wrestlers JabbarNajafov (50 kg) and Islambek Dadov (69 kg) performed on the first day of the competition and confidently reached the final round. Having won against his rival in the final round, IslambekDadov became the gold medalist and the Olympic Champion. And Jabbar Najafov became the owner of the silver medal.

Our representative in female wrestling Leyla Gurbanova (52 kg) also demonstrated very confident wrestling until the final round. However she lost to her Japanese rival in the final, ranked second in the Olympic Games and became the silver medalist.

The freestylers joined the competition on the very last day of both the wrestling matches and the Olympics in general. Both Teymur Mammadov (63 kg) and Igbal Hajizadeh (100 kg) performed successfully within their subgroups and in the final rounds and brought home 2 gold medals in one day.

It is important to note that our Olympic Champions let their rivals score only 1 point in all their bouts collectively. Thus Islambek Dadov finished his matches with a score of 13:0, TeymurMammadov 39:0 and IgbalHajizadeh 31:1.

Another interesting fact is that our freestyler Teymur Mammadov won the highest titles in all the significant tournaments he participated in this year. Thus, in 2014 he won gold medals at the European and World Championships and the Olympic Games and lived up to all the hopes.

The great results of our young wrestlers at the Olympic Games are not only a result of the systematic and correct policy of Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation, but also the indicator that the future of the Azerbaijani wrestling is in the right hands.
