Our national senior freestyle wrestling team has participated at the 45th international tournament, dedicated to the memory of five-times World Champion Ali Aliyev, in Makhachkala, Dagestan.

Our wrestlers participated at the competition headed by Head Coach Semyon Chterev, Senior Coach Firdovsi Umudov and Coach David Kurtsiya. Before leaving for Makhachkala, they were at a joint training camp together with teams from Kazakhstan, Belarus and Dagestan until May 23.

Wrestlers in 57, 65, 74 and 97 kg weight classes competed on the first day of the tournament. Our wrestlers completed the day with 1 silver medal.

In 97 kgweight category the Olympic and World Champion Sharif Sharifov reached the final round without any obstacles. On the way to the final he won against Hungary’s Attila Zmik, Ukraine’s Pavel Oleynik and Russia’s Marat Ibrahimov with absolute superiority. He had a tough gold medal match against Russia’s Yuri Belonovski. Having lost with the score 2:5, Sharif became the silver medalist of the championship.

On the second day of the tournament we saw wrestlers competing in 61, 70, 86 and 125 kg weight classes. Our wrestlers completed the second day with 1 gold and 1 bronze medal.

Our representative in 125 kg weight class Ali Isayev proved to be stronger than all of his rivals and became the owner of the gold medal. His final match was quite interesting. It took him only 1 minute to conduct a rather spectacular bridge on his Iranian rival. He thus won a victory by fall and became the champion of the tournament.

In 61 kg category Ahmednabi Gvarzatilov won against Russia’s Bulat Batoev in the decisive match and became the bronze medalist of the tournament.
