Azerbaijan is among the progressing countries when it comes to development of sports. Our sportsmen bring home victories from the Olympics, World and European Championships. Our country is one of the leaders for the number of victories in significant tournaments. These achievements are the indicator of the well-thought and targeted sports policy under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev!

The strong economy of the country provides for improvement of the physical infrastructure in all social spheres, including sports. New Olympic complexes are built, the existing centers are being renovated and rebuilt correspondingly to the new modern requirements throughout the country. Such experience allows our country to host internationally significant tournaments. This, in turn, introduces great prospects for enriching the sports traditions. In this regard the performance of our wrestlers attracts special attention. Their brilliant victories have found their worthy place in our sports annals.

The Golden Grand Prix international tournament dedicated to the memory of the national leader Heydar Aliyev has even more enhanced the reputation of our motherland as a wrestling country. The tournament has been held since 2008 and from the very first day it has been one of the significant tournaments in the FILA calendar.

Under the leadership of the president of Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation Fazil Mammadov the Golden Grand Prix international tournament has become an internationally qualitatively new phenomenon both in organizational and technical indicators. The experts have started considering it an example of Azerbaijani standards. This is the supreme tournament of sorts for the wrestlers and only the strongest can compete in it. Qualification tournaments are held in different countries throughout the season to choose those select few, who will participate at the Golden Grand Prix. The winners of the Paris, Budapest and Krasnoyarsk Grand-Prix then compete in the final round in Baku.

The tournament is significant for both Azerbaijani and world wrestling, because such tournaments define the current state, general level and the upcoming tasks for the world wrestling. In other words, the Golden Grand Prix tournament dedicated to the memory of the national leader Heydar Aliyev overall affects the development of world wrestling.

Until now 6 of such tournaments have been held and our wrestlers have always shown great results. The 22 medals won by our freestyle, Greco-Roman and female wrestlers in the first tournaments created a great foundation for further constant successes. Farid Mansurov, Fuad Aliyev, Rovshan Bayramov, Ilgar Abdulov, Hasan Aliyev, Vitali Rahimov, Jabrayil Hasanov, Khetag Gazyumov, Sona Ahmadli, Maria Stadnik, Yuliya Ratkevich and many others enriched the traditions of Azerbaijani wrestling even more with their victories in different seasons.

They overall won 129 medals – 42 gold, 32 silver and 55 bronze. These are the results of our wrestlers from the previous 6 tournaments. The 7th tournament will be held in Baku from 25 to 27 July. The fact that the tournament is being continued and has been delegated to be held in Baku is the obvious indicator of the trust FILA has in Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation and the assuredness that the tournament will once again be organized on a high level.

Both the representatives of the federation and the members of our national team are preparing seriously for the upcoming event. The responsibility for our sportsmen is upped even more as the tournament is dedicated to the memory of our national leader. They are training with the set goal of achieving new victories. Their rivals will not be weak. The best teams from all over the world – Turkey, Russia, Iran, Georgia, Bulgaria, United States of America, Germany and others – are expected to participate in the tournament.

Until now the Azerbaijani wrestlers have always been in the top three for team rankings. And our sportsmen scored more than 20 medals in each of the last three tournaments. These tournaments have been memorable for the victories by Haji Aliyev, Orkhan Ahmadov, Kamran Mammadov, Rafig Husseinov, Rasul Chunayev, Saman Tahmasibi and other sportsmen. These achievements once again prove that wrestling is constantly developing in Azerbaijan. There is no doubt that the 7th Golden Grand Prix international wrestling tournament dedicated to the memory of the national leader Heydar Aliyev will also be remembered for the victories of our wrestlers.
