Azerbaijani sportsmen attending at the XXXI Summer Olympic Games in Rio-de-Janeiro returned home. Answering journalists’ questions in Heydar Aliyev International Airport our wrestlers stated they had dedicated gaining achievements at the Olympic Games to the spirit of our martyrs.

Head coach of freestyle wrestling national team Saypulla Absaidov:

“We always perform at the Olympic Games on the high level. That’s why supporters constantly expect from us high results and our responsibility is getting bigger. And this in a certain extent psychologically affect to our wrestlers. In general we performed well. 5 of our 6 sportsmen gained medals. It’s a big achievement. We thing of absent of the gold medal and we will analyze performance of our wrestlers. We will work on elimination of the mistakes”.

Senior coach of freestyle wrestling national team of Azerbaijan Firdovsi Umudov:

“Gaining 5 medals in 6 weighting categories we became 1st in team classification. All of our wrestlers deserved to gain gold medal. After this we will try to continue our successes. We dedicate our wins to April martyrs and overall to all our martyrs. We believe that with the supervision of our Commander-in-Chief we will get more victories”.

Golden (London, 2012) and silver (Rio-de-Janeiro, 2016) medalist of Olympic Games Togrul Asgarov:

“I wished to get in Rio gold medal and as a twofold Olympic champion to go down in the history of Azerbaijan sport. But unfortunately I had to satisfy with silver medal. On my opinion every medal in the competition with strong rivalry is valuable. I’m very happy that I made a contribution in 18 medals gaining by our team. The final bout was unsuccessful for me. I got injured at the beginning of the meeting. This injury showed its affect and I lost to strong rival from Russia. Now I’ll do my best to repeat my London success in “Tokyo-2020”.

Runner up (Rio-de-Janeiro, 2016) and twofold bronze medalist (Beijing-2008, London-2012) of Olympic Games Khetag Gazyumov:

I went to “Rio-2016” only for gold medal. As you know I was bronze medalist at two previous Olympiads. I’m very upset not to be a champion. But what can I do, it’s a sport, wrestling. In the final I was seriously ready to turn over in the final bout, but probably I made a tactical mistake. I create a chance to the rival to grab my leg. This predestined the fate of the bout. I had a long way career in the sport. I can’t say I had already taken a decision. I will think about it. After that I’ll declare about final decision”.

Gold (London, 2012) and bronze (Rio-de-Janeiro, 2016) medalist Sharif Sharifov:

“I went to Rio for gold medal. I wanted very much to gain again gold medal, but it didn’t come off. I satisfied with bronze medal. In the first period of the semifinal bout I lost rival 6 points and then I couldn’t consolidate the bout. I don’t think to change my weight. It’s much easier for me to wrestle in 86 kg. I don’t want to say something beforehand. I think to have a little rest and then to restore trainings”.

Bronze medalist of Olympic Games Haji Aliyev:

“I’m happy for gaining bronze medal. In general I’m satisfied with my performance but due to much loosing of my weight at the end the tiredness began to show it. But I stand till the end and managed to gain bronze medal. Our main purpose ahead in Islamic Solidarity Games. I want to perform worthily and make happy Azerbaijan people with the medal”.

Bronze medalist of Olympic Games Djabrayil Hasanov:

At “Rio-2016” I got 3rd place. I highly evaluate it. As Olympic Games is sort of competition where not every sportsman can attend and gain a result. I know that semifinal bout was the subject of discussions by supporters. Russian wrestler was really strong and a little bit unfair from referee. It was my fate. Thanks to God I managed to return home with the medal”.
