Sabah Shariati: “I’m very happy for rising Azerbaijan flag”

“I’m very happy for gaining Olympic medal and rising Azerbaijan flag”.

These words said to the interview to media Azerbaijany Greco-roman wrestler Sabah Shariati gaining bronze medal in 130 kg weighting category at the 2016 Rio-de-Janeiro Summer Olympic Games.

27 years old sportsman told about hard trainings during last 3 years and expressed his gratitude to coaches’ staff, Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation and Sport Ministry for created conditions. He called German Eduard Popp strong rival he defeated in bronze medal contest: “Before at the European championship I lost to Popp. This time according to coaches’ instructions I wrestled with him on the different way. As a result pinning his back down I gained seeming easy win”.

While Shariati was pinning back of Popp down German side expressing their protest requested challenge. Azerbaijan representative said that at that time he wasn’t worried about it and sure he’d gained clear win. Due to neck injury getting in round of 16 stage with USA athlete Robert Timoti David Smith he didn’t feel well in the bout against Turkish sportsman Riza Kayaalp. Iranian legionary connected his lost to Kayaalp with this fact.

Experienced athlete said that he knew his gaining of the first Olympic medal in heavy weight in wrestling discipline to Azerbaijan: “It has always been a problem in this country to gain a medal in heavy weight. Last year at the European Games I became a runner up as well. And now at the Olympic Games I became bronze medalist. I dedicate this win to all Azerbaijani people and Azerbaijanis”.
