Our wrestlers gained during 2015 year 90 gold, 89 silver and 149 bronze medals

Expiring 2015 year was successful and memorable for Azerbaijani wrestlers. National team attended at international tournaments and championships got high achievements.

During the year our athletes tried their hand in a number of domestic and international tournaments. Among them 3 major events – World cup, Baku-2015 European Games as well as license to Rio-2016 Olympic Games World championsip in Las Vegas, USA our wrestlers worthily defend sport honour of our country increased number of the medals in the asset of the national team.

Senior Greco-roman national team became winner of WC competitions being held in February in the capital of Iran Tehran and wrote new page in the history of Azerbaijan sport. Our freestyle wrestling team completed the analogous competition on the 3rd place.

Members of our national teams on the official international competitions in 2015 – gaining at the European and World championships 25 gold, 17 silver and 40 bronze overall got 82 medals. In the first ever conducting Baku-2015 1st European Games national team of Azerbaijan wrestling being represented with 24 athletes gained 15 (6 gold, 2 silver and 7 bronze) medals. From 20 sports disciplines including in the program of 1st European Games our athletes gained 56 medals in 12 sport disciplines. And the biggest number of them (15 medals) falls to the share of wrestling national team.

In the licensee World championship taking place in Las Vegas, USA to XXXI Summer Olympic Games to be held in Rio-de-Janeiro, Brazil our wrestling team gained overall 8 (2 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze) medals and 11 licensees. One of the memorable moments at the WC was first time in the history of our wrestling gaining by Hadji Aliyev second title of world champion.

Also in 2015 for the first time was held European championships among under 23 years’ old wrestlers (U-23). National team completed 1 gold, 2 silver and 6 bronze medals. Juniors’ wrestling European championship taking place in Istanbul, Turkey was successful for our team as well. At the championship Azerbaijan athletes gained overall 15 (5 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze) medals. Female wrestling team gaining more (6 medals) among teams wrote new history and got title of the European champion in team classification.    

At junior’s world championship taking place in Salvador de Bahiya, Brazil national team of Azerbaijan overall gained 12 (7 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze) medals. On the number of medals our freestyle wrestlers leaving behind all teams became winners and wrote new page in the history of our wrestling.

2015 year was successful to our cadets as well. So at the world championship in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sarajevo our athletes overall gained 11 (1 gold, 1 silver and 9 bronze medals). And at the European championship in Subotica, Serbia 9 (3 gold, 1 silver and 5 bronze) medals.

Moreover our national team at the final stage of  “Gold Grand Prix” international tournament dedicated to the memory of the nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev conducting for the 8th time gained 5 gold, 8 silver and 8 bronze medals. So, overall in 2015 our athletes attending at various international tournaments gained 246 medals. 65 of these medals were gold hallmark, 72 silver and 109 bronze.

Our sportsmen gaining overall in 2015 328 (90 gold, 89 silver and 149 bronze) medals updated last year’s result (294 medals). 155 of these medals fall to the share of cadets, 69 juniors wrestlers. Wrestlers gaining 9 medals at U-23 European championship during the year they gained 95 medals at seniors’ competitions. 139 of them were gained by freestyle and 131 by Greco-roman wrestlers. 58 medals fall to the share of female wrestlers.

The upcoming 2016 year is very important year with responsible fixture. The main task for our team is to go to major event of four-year XXXI Summer Olympic Games to be held in Brazil at full strength, successfully perform and improve achievement of London Summer Olympic Games.
