‘I am very happy to have become the winner of the European Games and to have done so here in Baku, in front of our own wrestling fans’, – said the capitan of Azerbaijani national team Khetag Gazyumov, who won the gold medal in 97 kg weight class in freestyle wrestling at the European Games.

Gazyumov especially noted that he was very happy that President Ilham Aliyev came to watch his final bout.

Among all his bouts, our wrestler specially noted his victory against the Russian athlete Abdusalam Gadisov in the semifinal match: ‘I wouldn’t say that it was a rematch for last year’s loss of mine. It simply was another bout we held against each other, and I won this time. I could even say that I was a little lucky. We will have more bouts ahead. I have to admit that in the beginning I felt the pressure of the support from the audience. However, I pulled myself together later and felt very happy to have won at home.’

When it comes to his coach Firdovsi Umudov lifting him on his shoulders after his victory, Khetag laughed and said that it was homework well done.
