‘First of all, I dedicate this victory to my country’, – said the Azerbaijani representative Toghrul Asgarov, who won a gold medal in 65 kg weight class in freestyle wrestling today at the European Games.

Our Olympic Champion noted that the period from the London Olympics to the European Games was quite difficult for him: ‘Indeed it was a very difficult time for me. The European and World championships have been unsuccessful for me for two years now. I prepared really well for this day. My wish, my purpose was to win the gold medal of the first European Games. Thank God I managed to do it.’

Asgarov said he knew almost all his rivals: ‘The most important thing is that the strongest of all won. However, it was the first time I wrestled the Italian sportsman, who I competed against in the final bout.’

He also said that he understood those, who blamed him for being on a losing streak: ‘It has always been like that. The reactions to victories and losses have always been different. I wish to all sportsmen to always win and to have smiles of victories on their faces.’

The gold medalist of the European Games added that he was capable of winning in the next Olympic Games and World Championship: ‘I am capable of that. I have that potential. I became the Olympic Champion at the age of 19. There is a long path ahead of me. I had two unsuccessful years. I had a knee surgery and was away from the mats for a year. It was difficult to bring myself up together in a year. But everything is good now.’
