The year of 2014 has been one of the many successful years for Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation. Our national teams have all come back with great results from the international tournaments and championships.

All of these achievements are an obvious example of the attention and care of the President of the country, President of the National Olympic Committee, Mr. Ilham Aliyev towards sports and sportsmen. Our wrestlers are able to increase their successes with every year thanks to the successful sports policy in the country. President of Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation Mr. Fazil Mammadov has given the instructions to create all the conditions, strengthen the physical infrastructure and hold regular high-level training camps, which directly affects the successful performance of our wrestlers on international arenas.

Let’s have a look at the statistics of the successes during the year:

The members of our national teams won overall 65 medals – 27 gold, 22 silver and 16 bronze – at the official international tournaments they took part in.

28 out of these were won by cadets. Our cadet wrestlers won 13 gold, 9 silver and 6 bronze medals at the European and World Championships and at the 2nd Youth Olympics and demonstrated that the future of our wrestling is in good hands. This result is better than the last year’s performance both in quality and quantity of the medals.

Our junior wrestlers were also remembered for their successful participation and the official tournaments. Thus our juniors came back from the European and World championships with 10 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze medals and continued their successful result from the previous year. It is especially noticeable that our juniors have managed to double the number of the gold medals earned.

And our senior national teams have won 17 medals – 4 gold, 8 silver and 5 bronze.

Moreover, our national teams won 229 medals at the international tournaments they participated in, including the Final Golden Grand Prix international wrestling tournament dedicated to the national leader Heydar Aliyev and. Out of these 75 were gold, 59 silver and 95 bronze.

The upcoming 2015 is a very demanding and significant calendar year for our sportsmen, because our wrestlers are facing serious challenges at significant tournaments such as the 1st European Games to be held for the first time in Baku and the licensing World Champion for the Brazil Summer Olympics.
