The members of our junior Greco-Roman wrestling team have completed the Junior European Wrestling Championship in Katowice, Poland, and have returned home.

Fans, media representatives and officials from Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation welcomed our wrestlers at the Heydar Aliyev international airport.

The members of our Greco-Roman wrestling team joined the competition on the last two days of the championship and won 3 gold medals. Ibrahim Nurullayev (50 kg), Murad Mammadov (55 kg) and Islam Abbasov (84 kg) were more skilful than all their rivals and won the highest prize of the tournament. Overall our team scored 45 points and came in third in team ranking after Russia and Georgia.

The senior coach of our national team Shaban Donat analyzed the performance of our wrestlers at the championship and said that he was satisfied with the result:

“The heads of the federation created all the necessary conditions for us to train. In every tournament we try our best to live up to the trust the federation has in us. This tournament was much more serious. There are no weak rivals at the European Championship. One of the gladdening aspects of the championship was that our biggest rival, the Russian team, could not win even one gold medal, and we won 3. Of course, we could have had more medals. Some of our wrestlers did not manage to get a medal for their own mistakes, some for the misjudgment of referees. There is the World Championship ahead of us. We will once again try our best to make Azerbaijan proud.”

The gold medalist of the European Championship Islam Abbasov shared his impressions with the tournament and said that the final bout was the hardest for him:

“I easily won against all my rivals until the final match. I had wrestled against the local sportsman in the semifinal. I managed to beat him with a big difference in score despite all the cheers he got from the audience. But my final bout was very intense. I won against the German wrestler being ahead in points. I am very happy to have become the champion, having raised our flag and everybody rise for our national anthem. I will also try to repeat this success at the upcoming World Championship. We train very hard before every tournament. I would like to thank the Federation for all the conditions they create for us.”
