The Senior Greco-Roman wrestling World Cup tournament was held in Teheran, capital of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Besides Azerbaijan, teams from Iran, Sweden, Germany, Russia, Hungary, Turkey and Armenia also competed in the tournament.

According to the draw, Azerbaijani wrestlers competed against the teams from Iran, Sweden and Germany in the subgroup A. The wrestlers from Russia, Hungary, Turkey and Armenia essayed their powers in the subgroup B.

Firstly, our wrestlers had to compete against the hosting Iranian sportsmen and they completed the bouts with a victory of 6:2 after some intense wrestling. They also won against the German and Swedish teams with the score of 7:1 and became the leaders within their subgroup. With such result, our Greco-Roman wrestling team penned a first in the history of Azerbaijani wrestling history. It was the first time our Greco-Roman team reached the World Cup finals.

Our wrestlers competed against the leading team from the other subgroup in the final round – the Russian sportsmen. The intense bouts finished with an equal score of 4:4. However, the victory was given to our team for criteria of classification points (18:17). Thus our wrestlers claimed Azerbaijan’s first ever Greco-Wrestling World Cup.
