The Azerbaijani national team ranked third at the Senior Greco-Roman wrestling World Cup in Teheran, capital of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and returned home.

Our wrestlers, who opened a new page in history of wrestling as the third best team in the world, were met by the AWF officials and representatives from the sports society and mass media at the airport. The Coach of Azerbaijani national Greco-Roman wrestling team Akif Aliyev said that he was happy with our wrestlers’ achievement. He explained why we had completely different wrestlers competing against Iran and Armenia and thus lost 8:0 to the Iranian wrestlers.

“This was our Head Coach’s tactics. He had preserved all the strength for the Armenian team, because Armenia is both our rival and our enemy. We had to win against them. And that we did with a victory of 8:0.”

The World and European Champion Hasan Aliyev said that the members of our team considered the bouts against Armenia more important and each wrestler did his best, thus scoring a victory of 8:0.

The member of our team, Rasul Chunayev, says that our team has achieved their goal. “This year our goal was to return with a cup and medals from the World Cup tournament. And we did exactly that.”

We would like to note that our sportsmen wrestled against Korea, Armenia, Iran and Finland in their subgroup. They lost their first round of bouts to the hosting Iranian team, however they then consequently won against Armenia (8:0), Korea (5:3) and Finland (5:3). Thus they ranked second in their subgroup and received a chance to fight for the bronze medal. Our team held their decisive round of matches against the Hungarian sportsmen and won 6:2. They ranked third and won the bronze medal of the World Cup.

So far this has been the most successful result for our Greco-Roman wrestlers at the World Cup tournament. Before this our wrestlers had ranked 4th twice, in 2011 in Minsk, capital of Belarus, and in 2012 in Saransk, Russian Federation.
