The members of our freestyle wrestling team, who already concluded their matches at the Cadet European Wrestling Championship in Samokov, Bulgaria, have returned home.

Our wrestlers were met by fans, mass media representatives and officials from Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation at HeydarAliyev international airport.

We would like to remind our readers that our cadet freestyle wrestling team overall won 4 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals and came in second in team ranking with 75 points. Russia ranked first with 88 points and Armenia third with 58.

The champions were Afgan Khashalov (50 kg), Teymur Mammadov (63 kg), Shamil Sadullayev (85 kg) and Igbal Hajizadeh (100 kg). Elvin Namazov (46 kg) won a silver medal. And the bronze medalists were Ravil Babazadeh (69 kg) and Hajimurad Mohammedsaidov (76 kg).

Our national team managed to win 3 licenses out of the possible 5 to the Second Youth Olympics to be held in Nanjing. Our freestyle wrestlers who won licenses in 46, 63 and 100 kg weight classes will be represented in 2 weight categories in Nanjing.

The senior coach of our cadet freestyle wrestling team Asgarkhan Novruzov shared his views about the championship:

“We had prepared well to the championship. This year our goal was to receive licenses to the Nanjing Olympic Games. And we managed to do that. All wrestlers had undergone a high training process. The management of the federation considers all our wishes when it comes to training and tries to see to them immediately. I think it is the logical result of such attention and care. We are very happy that we could live up to expectations. Our wrestlers performed very well. We managed to achieve this success because they fulfilled all the tasks given to them. I would like to thank all the members of the team and congratulate all the wrestling fans.”

The European Champion in 100 kg weight class Igbal Hajizadeh also shared his joy of victory:

“Our federation creates all conditions for us to train. The only thing expected from us is to live up to expectations with our victories. And we are doing everything we can. There are the World Championship and the 2nd Olympics ahead. Our main goal is to perform well on both tournaments, make our people happy and wave the Azerbaijani flag high up.”

The European Champion in 50 kg weight class Afgan Khashalov also described the tournament:

“I had 4 matches and scored a victory with absolute superiority in each one of them. The most important bout for me was the semifinal match. My rival was from Armenia. With the help of my coaches, I managed to beat him as well. Then I also won against the Russian wrestler in the final and became the champion. I am very happy that I got to be the European Champion, have everybody rise to our national anthem and lift our flag high.”
