About the Federation

The Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation (AWF) was founded in 1993 and was admitted to the International Wrestling Federations Association (FILA) the same year. It is one of the collective members of the Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee. Today, the AWF encompasses three sports which are part of the Olympic program – free-style wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling and women’s wrestling. There are wrestling schools in almost every district of Azerbaijan, while wrestling is one of the most popular sports in the country. The AWF enjoys a good reputation and respect in the international wrestling world. Of course, this has been possible because we have tried to do our work at a high level and to comprehensively develop wrestling as a sport in the country. The FILA management has given the AWF good feedback for successful organization in Baku of the license-winning world championship in September 2007 and the Golden Grand Prix tournament in memory of our nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev in June 2008.
